…and welcome to the 31st queerfilm festival Bremen and the 2nd queerfilm festival Bremerhaven!
In the year of the spotted hyena, we want to growl at the queerphobic patriarchy, break down gender stereotypes and leave binary thinking behind us. Contrary to prejudices and clichés, spotted hyenas are very social animals that live in matriarchal structures. At first glance, there is no recognisable difference between their sexual organs and they only have sex consensually. That’s why we’re celebrating the spotted hyena as this year’s festival animal!
We have put together a programme of the finest queer films for you to bring diverse life perspectives and realities to the screen. The festival will, of course, open with our legendary short film evening. Afterwards, 12 feature-length films await you in Bremen and three in Bremerhaven. They will be accompanied by a supporting programme to which we have invited various guests. You can find more information on our website and our social media channels. We are particularly pleased about our cooperation with Queeraspora e.V. and Trans*Recht e.V., who are organising the Thursday of the festival this year. They will be screening the film Joyland, which will be followed by a panel discussion. The end of the festival will be crowned by another screening of the short film evening and a party in Bremerhaven.
We also want to celebrate City46 in particular, which has turned 50 this year! As an independent community cinema, it makes it possible to bring diverse perspectives into the programme. We are delighted that the queerfilm festival has grown from within City46 and that queer realities can be shown at this venue every year.
Even after 31 years of the queerfilm festival, we still have a lot to do. Progress is being made, such as the Self-Determination Act, which will make life for trans people in Germany easier. At the same time, right-wing voices are becoming louder, gender-inclusive language is being banned in some German states and queer people still have to deal with discrimination. We are appalled by the direction in which societal discussions are slipping and want to stand up to this together. Right now, we think it’s important to remain visible and take up space. That’s why we don’t just want to show films at the festival, but also open up a space for the community. Let’s stick together and empower each other!
We look forward to an exciting queerfilm festival with you!

Once again this year, the audience can crown the most popular film with the Audience Award. Voting is possible after each full-length film!
Support at the festival
Racism, sexism, homo-, trans- and queerphobia as well as any other form of discrimination will not be tolerated at the queerfilm festival Bremen. The queerfilm team will support you if you feel uncomfortable and you experience or observe assaultive situations.
Our awareness concept will be displayed in the premises of City 46 and JUB during the festival and shared on social media.
