The Wet Sand café is located in a small, lonely village on the Georgian coast. The inhabitants see themselves as a close-knit community with the same values and norms. With Eliko’s death, it becomes clear that things in the village are not as harmonious and communal as they like to present themselves. When Eliko’s granddaughter Moe comes to organise the funeral, she discovers much more than just her grandfather’s secret love story. In her film, director Elene Naveriani shows how many opposites blend harmoniously and how melancholy can not only be sad, but can be a harbinger of change.

Switzerland/Georgia | 2021 | Feature film | Director: Elene Naveriani | 114 min. | Georgian with German subtitles

This year we are showing two films from Georgia: WET SAND and the documentary MARCH FOR DIGNITY. Both films show a Georgian society that is largely conservative, strongly influenced by the Orthodox Church and very homophobic. Nevertheless, both films bring a lot of queer empowerment, strong emotions and queer characters to the screen.
